Position Summary Provides electrical engineering decision-making skills for customer projects. Project Engineer
Position Summary Provides Engineering Project Management for customer projects. Includes supervising System/Layout Engineers, Machinery and Carrier Designers, Structural Engineers, Designer/Drafters, and other necessary mechanical engineering personnel. Must work closely with shop and field personnel in order to provide a complete turnkey conveyor system. Works closely with the Project Manager, Customers, Electrical Project Engineer and Field Superintendent. Responsibilities include system design, mechanical components, structural systems, management of engineering project schedule, production planning for shop and subcontractors, advance ordering equipment, review and maintenance of product shipping schedule, supervision of run-off testing, seeking design reviews, preparation of R&M data, preparation of FEA and FMEAs, support of customer-requested changes and preparation of technical documentation.
Duties & Responsibilities
  • Receive all design input from the customer, subcontractors, controls, Project Manager, shop and Field Superintendent. Schedule and document internal design review meetings to assure that the technical aspects of the project are met. Seek out additional input from support staff when necessary.
  • Review all customer specifications; identify conflicts and review with the Project Manager and Engineering Manager. Seek and document all deviations taken and bases for such in order to confirm the design bases used for the project.
  • Research various conveyor system design possibilities and offer alternatives to reduce cost, simplify operation or improve system performance.
  • Direct and review the activities of all assigned System/Layout Engineers, Machinery and Carrier Designers, Structural Engineers, Designer/Drafters, and other necessary Mechanical Engineering Personnel. Position Summary Provides mechanical engineering decision-making skills for machines, automation and carriers for ASI projects. This may include supervising other machine/carrier designers, drafting personnel and other necessary mechanical engineering personnel in order to provide a complete turnkey machine. Works closely with the Project Engineer, Electrical Project Engineer and customer.
Duties & Responsibilities
  • Receive design input from Project Engineer. Review customer specifications and functional requirements.
  • Establish design basis parameters for machinery and carriers using specifications and functional requirements in conjunction with customer standards and good engineering practices.
  • Develop and document dimensional basis for part, machinery, carrier interface points to clarify customer part locations on machinery and carriers. Establish reference points and benchmark plan to assist with layout development and field installation.
  • Perform engineering calculations required to assure proper operation of equipment. This may include FEA work, outside design review, peer review and/or customer approval. Customer approval alone is never to be relied upon for design verification.
  • Support proto-type development as necessary by specific project specifications. Plan projects to support proto-type requirements.
  • Understand schedule, keeping Project Engineer aware of status. Seek guidance prior to allowing work to fall behind schedule. This includes the ability to identify long lead time items and ordering them when appropriate to avoid missing schedule dates.
  • Provide timely instructions for Fabrication, Installation and Subcontractors through Project Engineer.
  • Conform to ISO requirements and R&M documentation requirements.
  • Provide clearance studies and layout information to layout personnel including safety fencing, screen guard and other fixed barriers. Give consideration to safe working clearances around machinery and equipment. Integrate maintenance access into base design.
  • Plan manufacturing of carriers and machinery considering lead-time, manufacturing methods, shipping size and installation methods.
  • Consider safety aspects of carriers and machinery as they relate to production and maintenance personnel. Assure clearance lines and cording studies, accumulation studies, merge studies, accumulation on turns etc. are correct. Eliminate hazards, pinch points and provide safety devises using good engineering practices. Seek additional input from Project Engineer, Engineering Manager and Project Manager for any potential safety issues that require additional input to resolve.
  • Consider maintainability of equipment. Consider serviceability in base design. Consider what and how service parts can be made to fit and installed with a reasonable effort. Consider and evaluate bearing life calculations for inclusion of special lubrication needs and/or the elimination of re-lubrication provisions. Assist Technical Documentation group in development of spare parts lists and special maintenance procedures for carriers, mastering fixtures and machinery.
  • Consider special assembly requirements that may include welding symbols, heat-treating requirements, mag-particle inspection, torque specifications, testing, documentation and special installation methods. Assure engineering drawings clearly show requirements.

  • Complete detailed drawings for the shop, field and sub-contractor fabrication.
  • Assure that work is accurate and complete.
  • Assure that customer and ASI CAD standards are followed.
  • Assure appropriate application of dimensioning and tolerance values are applied to convey fabrication intent.
  • Produce clear and precise drawings that are easy to read and efficiently utilize paper.
  • Travel to job sites as required to check field conditions and collect data. Travel may last for extended time periods.
  • Include fabrication notes to assist and clarify special procedures that may be needed.
  • Conform to ISO requirements.
  • Follow back-up procedures and utilize company resources appropriately
  • Demonstrate the ability to work professionally as a team player and willingness to assist others.
  • Regular and predictable attendance.
  • May require working extended hours, weekends and/or holidays.
  • Perform other duties and projects as assigned or that become necessary to fulfill the company’s responsibilities and needs with respect to its business.

Qualification Requirements

  • A High School Diploma
  • Working knowledge of CAD software
  • Practical mechanical aptitude to understand the functionality of machinery and equipment
  • Must have technical comprehension skills to read and understand requirements from specifications, drawings, instructions, and other design input information.
  • Must be capable of working independently.
  • Good interpersonal communication skills working with Engineering, Shop and Field personnel.
  • Understanding of fabrication and dimensioning practices as they relate to the construction of equipment.
