Automatic Systems, Inc. supplied the design, fabrication, and installation of the coal and limestone material handling systems for the Iatan Generation Station Units 1 & 2 in Weston, Missouri for Kansas City Power & Light.
The plant consisted of a single 750 MW coal-fired, steam-electric generating unit. A new 850 MW Unit 2 was added along with new flue gas desulfurization (FGD) equipment which also operates with the existing coal-fired steam generating facility.

The limestone handling system consists of a truck unloading facility complete with building, unloading hopper, variable speed belt feeder, 36” 500 TPH stock out conveyor, and a covered lowering well for a 30 day supply pile. Under the storage pile, two reclaim hoppers with variable speed belt feeders discharge onto two parallel 36” 400 TPH reclaim conveyors that deliver limestone to day bins. The conveyors are equipped with full hinged belt covers, cross-belt magnetic separators, and belt scales to monitor tonnage delivered. The entire system uses dry dust collection. |
The coal handling system consists of 10 new conveyors and 6 new belt feeders for upgrades to the existing Unit 1 and to supply Powder River Basin (PRB) coal to Units 1 & 2. The as-received conveyor upgrades included changing the rotary car dumper belt feeder drive and a new 72”, 3500 TPH stock out conveyor 3B with a telescoping chute. Beneath the stock out pile are 4 reclaim hoppers with grizzly grates, cut-off gates, and 60”, 1750 TPH belt feeders. The belt feeders deliver PRB coal onto a new 72”, 3500 TPH conveyor (5B) which empties into the surge bin in the crusher house. The existing emergency reclaim feeders were replaced with new 60” belt feeders. | ![]() Conveyor 5B above newly-sided crusher house |
The crusher house upgrades included new crusher motors, crusher rebuilds, surge bin extension, and gates actuators. The crusher house along with transfer towers were enclosed with siding to meet the air permit requirements. The entire fuel yard was equipped with a dry dust collection system that pneumatically conveyed the dry dust to the silos. |

A series of 48”, 1500 TPH conveyors were also added to deliver coal to tripper conveyors which empty into the Unit 2 silos. The controlled flow chutes used between these conveyors were designed using DEM (discrete element modeling) software. |
