Automatic Systems, Inc. supplied PRB coal handling system upgrades to the Whelan Energy Center Unit 1 for Hastings Utilities in Hastings, Nebraska. The existing Unit 1 plant is a 77 MW that receives PRB coal via a rotary car dumper. A future 220 MW Unit 2 is planned.

ASI provided the design, fabrication, and installation to replace the existing 30” Conveyors 1 and 2 with new 36” belt conveyors. These conveyors facilitated faster unloading of the trains by increasing tonnage from 500 TPH to 700 TPH. Three vibratory feeders in the rotary car dumper pit were replaced with new 42” belt feeders. A new magnetic separator and belt scale were added to conveyor 1. Wet suppression was added to the transfer points to mitigate the coal dust. |
There were many crusher tower improvements. Conveyor 1 was given a new head chute. A splitter gate to modulate coal to the Unit 1 plant and/or to the stock-out pile was installed. There was also a new 3-way gate to divert coal to Unit 1, future Unit 2, or Conveyor 4, which would be for resale to local customers. The existing dust collection system was also reworked. |
